Sam Lake, Remedy’s lead writer behind Max Payne and now Alan Wake, in an interview with 1up, describes this game as a "psychological action thriller [where] everything revolves around the mind of the main character -- the things that lurk in the depths of his subconscious mind". According to Lake, the story is not only inspired through TV Series and movies, but it will also be actually divided into episodes.
"We think of Alan Wake as Alan Wake season one; the game is the DVD box of a season of a television series turned into a videogame. The experience is divided into episodes with cliffhanger endings."
I have to admit: I love good television series. Not the series about a bunch of near-to-nervous-breackdown-nymphomaniac-middle age personas, but rather those that fire up my imagination, mirror my own fears and expectations, series where impossible things happen. It was about time someone produced a game which revolves around the idea of a really good story that simply cannot be told in 5-6 hrs of play. I have high hopes Alan Wake will finally prove that games are in fact art.
